An interesting consumer trend has been developing in the jewelry industry over the past handful of years, as data published by the De Beers Group suggests that more women are buying their own engagement rings.
The study, which was published in late 2019, reported that the number of women in the United States that purchased their engagement ring doubled from seven percent to 14 percent over the last five years. The De Beers Group also found that women who purchase their engagement rings tend to spend about a third more, on average, for their ring compared to their male counterparts. While on the surface it may seem that buying your own engagement ring flies in the face of tradition, more women are choosing to buy their rings as it gives them the ability to become more involved in the design process of the ring.
Being proactive and getting involved in the ring selection process makes it much easier for women to ensure that their engagement ring will be exactly what they want and that they will cherish it forever – which is important given that they will be the ones wearing the ring every day! As relationship dynamics change and the purchasing power of women continues to rise, it makes sense that more women have decided to purchase their own engagement rings. One key benefit to this is that it takes quite a bit of pressure off the shoulders of the significant other. Significant others no longer need to agonize and try to make an informed guess on the perfect piece of jewelry without any input. Buying your own engagement ring is not something that everyone will want to do, but it does make quite a bit of sense for those who know exactly what they want and are looking for something specific for their ring.
